For 2009, Volkswagen's New Beetle is powered by a 150-horsepower 2.5L inline 5-cylinder engine. In the coupes, it is mated to either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with Tiptronic. The convertibles are offered only with the 6-speed automatic transmission. With the manual transmission, the Beetle is quite frugal, with an estimated 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. New Beetles have a number of standard safety features, including front-seat head/thorax side airbags, anti-lock brakes, and VW's electronic stabilization program (ESP) with anti-slip regulation.
