For 2009, Volkswagen's New Beetle is powered by a 150-horsepower 2.5L inline 5-cylinder engine. In the coupes, it is mated to either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with Tiptronic. The convertibles are offered only with the 6-speed automatic transmission. With the manual transmission, the Beetle is quite frugal, with an estimated 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. New Beetles have a number of standard safety features, including front-seat head/thorax side airbags, anti-lock brakes, and VW's electronic stabilization program (ESP) with anti-slip regulation. The New Beetle convertible has a three-layer cloth soft top with a heated rear glass window. Convertibles also add the active rollover support system, which quickly deploys two spring-loaded posts behind the rear-seat headrests to improve safety in a rollover situation. Standard features on all New Beetles include height-adjustable heated front seats, a tilt/telescopic leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, air conditioning, a six-speaker MP3-compatible sound system with Sirius satellite radio, and power windows, locks, and mirrors. Also standard are 16-inch alloy wheels, heated washer nozzles, front floor mats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Options on the New Beetle are limited to a power sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a 6-disc CD changer. On convertibles, options include a choice of black or cream roof color, the CD changer, and two variations of 17-inch alloy wheels.
